This week I would like to share part of a beautiful letter I received from Matt and Debra Kestenbaum, who just celebrated their daughter Sara’s Bat Mitzvah.
“When Sara was in kindergarten and we learned about the separate minyanim for middle school, we were very skeptical. We practice Egalitarian Conservative Judaism and we were concerned about separating the boys and girls. Through the years, though, Sara flourished at Abrams, and we decided to stay through middle school.
Lucky for us, Phyllis Schachter began leading the girls’ minyan. As a result the minyan has been as critical a part of Sara’s development as anything she has experienced. Phyllis has taught the girls to daven- Sara read beautifully at her bat mitzvah thanks to the peer tutoring system, and she led Shacharit as well. Beyond that, Phyllis is helping the girls to develop self-confidence, she is inspiring them to lead, and she is demonstrating that prayer can be fun.”
Mazal Tov to the Kestenbaum family, and many thanks for the kind words about Abrams and Phyllis Schachter’s tutelage.
