Rabbi Budow
Dear Parents-
Today I would like to talk to you about tzedakah. As you know, my job involves raising money in a variety of ways; one being through the EITC program. We can learn a lesson about tzedakah from our friend, Jim McCaffrey, owner of McCaffrey Food Markets. This week I received notification from Federation that Jim has once again designated $100,000 to Abrams Hebrew Academy through the EITC program. We received $100,000 this year as a result of Jim’s largess, and will receive another $100,000 next year.

Jim is a fine, upstanding Irish Catholic man, and he does not have to give money to a Jewish organization. However, he not only gives to Abrams, but to all community worthy causes. This year, in addition to his generous allocation of EITC funding, he paid $1800 for a full page ad in our Community Fun Day ad journal. He certainly did not have to do this- he has already been incredibly generous to the school, but he understands the meaning of tzedakah.

The question now is whether we at Abrams understand the concept of giving like Jim does.
We have one official fund raising event a year, and this year Joni and Joe Glassman have worked very hard to organize a community, family friendly event. There is something for everyone at a reasonable cost- great food, entertainment for all ages, and lots of surprises, too. Every family should attend this event to support our school. Have you made your reservation?
Abrams does not have an endowment or a substantial line of credit at the bank- we depend on our yearly revenue to exist. I recently looked at some statistics for other area day schools and saw that Torah Academy in Philadelphia has a goal of $500,000 for their annual fund raiser and have already reached $475,000. Abrams has a much more modest goal, but we are not close to reaching it yet. The only people who can make it happen are you, our parents.
The question now is whether or not we are all doing our best to help the school succeed. In order to keep our tuition reasonable and our school solvent we have to meet our yearly goal. Let’s learn from people like Jim McCaffrey and support Abrams by doing the righteous thing. Reserve your tickets now for our annual fun day event.
Best,
Rabbi Ira Budow

Abrams Residence Visit
The 8th grade paid an informal visit to their friends at the Abrams Residence this week. They collaborated on a jewelry-making project, enjoyed great pastries from Lakewood, and most importantly, had time to schmooze and build on their warm and nurturing relationships with the seniors.
Pictures are worth 1,000 words, and the expressions on the faces of the students and the seniors say it all.
Thanks to the “Better Together Program” Abrams students and Abrams Residence seniors are learning from each other and experiencing the joy of inter-generational connections.
L’dor v’dor….

EITC Participation for Individuals

The Foundation for Jewish Day Schools  has been approved as a Special Purpose Entity (SPE). This  means that individuals who pay individual income taxes to PA can now participate in the EITC program  by joining the SPE.
This is a great opportunity for Abrams families and supporters who pay at least $6500 in PA State taxes to help themselves and Abrams through their participation in the program.
The Foundation for Jewish Day Schools will provide guidance on this process so that you can participate as an individual.
If you qualify, please take this opportunity to help the school and benefit from a tax credit for yourself.
