The Budowsphere

Rabbi Budow

The Budowsphere

The end of the school year always includes the typical celebrations- graduation, awards ceremonies, concerts and performances. However, this year is different. We have three notable retirements to acknowledge that are somewhat bittersweet- we celebrate this rite of passage for each of them and pray for happiness in their next phase of life, but at the same time it is difficult to imagine life at Abrams without their presence.

It is amazing to calculate that among the three retirees, Ellen Hartenstein, Barbara Wisnoff, and Caren Solomon, there are almost 90 years of service to Abrams Hebrew Academy. All of these women have given their hearts and souls to their students and the school, and we are incredibly appreciative of each of them.

The brunch celebration for Ellen Hartenstein on May 31, 2015 is going to be an exciting, emotion-packed day! The library will be dedicated in her honor, and the donor plaque is ready and waiting, filled with the names of many of the families Ellen has touched through her years at Abrams. Catering will be provided by Six Points Kosher Events, and the menu is definitely not for the faint of heart. It includes French toast, bagels and lox, frittata, Mediterranean fare, and even mac and cheese.

Be sure to come hungry and ready to enjoy great musical entertainment, too!

We have almost 250 people attending this Simcha, which is really a tribute to Ellen since the end of the year is packed with many conflicting events that often take away from attendance. Without a doubt, Ellen’s story is remarkable in the annals of Jewish education- she has spent 37 years as an educator and has impacted over 1000 students and parents.

Please send us any photos, videos, or notes that you would like included in the day’s festivities- since time is of the essence, please send them to the office as soon as possible. If you’d like to say some remarks at the event, please indicate that, as well.

Besides the celebration for Ellen, the end of the year will also bring well-deserved recognition of Barbara Wisnoff and Caren Solomon, who have each dedicated their careers to educating and nurturing Jewish children. We have been privileged to have these strong, talented women in our midst and before the end of the school year plan to honor their service to Abrams, as well.

L’Shalom-

Rabbi Ira Budow

2015 EITC Tips for 2nd Year Applications

Dancing to the Music

35 years ago I was a youth director in Elizabeth, NJ working for Rabbi Teitz. During one Rosh Chodesh assembly people got up and started dancing. I saw Rabbi Teitz in the hall and asked him to come and join us in the dancing. He was probably in his 60’s at that time, and he nicely demurred, saying “You’re better at that than I am.” I understood, but wondered what I would do if I were in his shoes.

Yesterday, while I was attending the music assembly with Rabbi Katz and Yehoshua Solomon, two young girls came up and asked me to dance with them. They were bubbly and excited, and I said, “Of course- why not?” Before I knew it I was dancing in a circle with 15-20 girls. Their eyes were dancing, they were happy and enthusiastic, and we were all having a great time.

I now know the answer to the question I asked myself so many years ago- it is 35 years later and I am still dancing.

Shabbat Shalom-

Rabbi Ira Budow

Field Day

AHA Field Day

Grades 1-5

  (Rain Date: June 10, 2015)

Grades 1-3   9am – 11:45am

Grades 4 -5   12:45pm – 3:30pm

This year’s field day is based on the TV series “Survivor.”

Each grade will have the opportunity to work cooperatively to achieve a particular goal using the skills they have learned during the PE unit  ” Team Challenges.”

In addition, a “key word” will be given to identify each grade that will help assist everyone in achieving their ultimate goal. Flags will be made to recognize each grade. Everyone is encouraged to dress in his/her own survivor gear. In years past students would dress in camouflage and face paint.

Students may want to bring a change of clothing due to water activities.

Regular lunch schedule will be followed.
